Dear Parents,
Happy
New Year! We hope you enjoyed the holiday vacation! The children came
back refreshed and ready to get back into the swing of things. Thank
you so much for the incredible gifts and thoughts for the holidays, it
was incredibly sweet of your families to think of us.
In
math we reviewed our work with fractions and took the Unit Assessment
on Wednesday. We began the multiplication unit in math. Going forward in
the year, nights that the students do not work on Spelling City, they
will be required to work on a math website for fifteen minutes. Unless
they have a perfect score on their multiplication test, they will need
to work on multiplication.com. This will facilitate their success in
this unit on multiplication and will be necessary for future success in
math.
We started our new Science Kit on Electric Circuits. Students are first
introduced to the basic properties of electricity as they learn about
electric circuits and the parts of a light bulb. Next, students learn
about conductors and insulators and about the symbols used to represent
the parts of a circuit in circuit diagrams. Students also explore
different kinds of circuits, learn about switches, construct a
flashlight, and investigate the properties of diodes. Finally, students
apply their knowledge and skills to wire a cardboard house.
Our
historical fiction unit is coming to an end next week. The students
are currently working to think about and compare themes across texts in a
time period. They will write an essay independently to show their
ideas on this teaching point across the texts Number the Stars, Rose Blanche, and Cats in Krasinski Square next week.
